Frequently Asked Questions
ADICTION SERVICES
1) What types of addiction and substance use issues does Thrive Therapy Services treat? We provide non-judgmental treatment for a wide range of addictions and compulsive behaviors, including alcohol use, prescription or illicit drug use, tobacco/nicotine addiction, and behavioral addictions such as gambling, shopping, and compulsive internet use.
2) How does Thrive treat addiction and substance use disorders? We utilize an integrative, client-centered approach that combines evidence-based psychotherapy—such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing—with medical management. We address both the root causes of addiction (such as trauma, stress, and underlying mental health conditions) and practical harm-reduction or recovery strategies.
3) Can Nurse Practitioners help with addiction and medication management at Thrive? Yes. Our Nurse Practitioners can perform comprehensive medical and psychiatric assessments, evaluate underlying co-occurring conditions (like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or ADHD), and prescribe or manage psychiatric and supportive medications when clinically appropriate.
4) Do you offer virtual addiction therapy across Ontario? Yes. We offer confidential, virtual addiction counselling, psychotherapy, and medical consults for adults and youth living anywhere in Ontario.
5) Where can I receive in-person addiction counselling with Thrive? In-person addiction therapy and medical consults are available at our physical clinic locations across the Durham Region and Northumberland County, including Port Perry, Whitby, Brooklin, and Cobourg.
6) Do I need to aim for full abstinence, or do you support harm reduction? We meet you wherever you are on your journey. Whether your goal is complete abstinence, harm reduction, moderate use, or simply understanding your relationship with a substance or behavior, our clinicians tailor your treatment plan to your personal goals.
7) Can addiction treatment address co-occurring mental health conditions (dual diagnosis)? Absolutely. Addiction frequently co-occurs with anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, mood disorders, or ADHD. Our multidisciplinary team of Psychotherapists, Social Workers, and Nurse Practitioners provides concurrent treatment to address both mental health and addiction simultaneously.
8) Do I need a doctor's referral to access addiction counselling at Thrive? No, a physician referral is not required. You can book an initial session or a free 20-minute phone consultation directly through our site to discuss your needs and find the right clinician.
