Psychiatric Assessment & Diagnosis

Comprehensive mental health assessment for children and youth experiencing emotional, behavioural, or psychiatric concerns. We help families better understand what is going on and what supports may be needed.

ADHD Assessment, Diagnosis & Treatment

We assess and diagnose ADHD and provide individualized treatment recommendations to help improve focus, regulation, school functioning, and day-to-day life. Medication treatment is available when appropriate.

CHILD & YOUTH PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES

1) What child and youth mental health services does Thrive Therapy Services provide? We provide comprehensive mental health care for children, teens, and young adults. Our services include pediatric psychiatric assessments, medical diagnosis, medication management by Nurse Practitioners, individual psychotherapy, and specialized support for children with complex needs such as Autism and Dual Diagnosis.

2) What mental health conditions do you treat in children and teens? Our multidisciplinary team assesses and treats a wide range of childhood and adolescent mental health concerns, including ADHD, anxiety disorders, depression, mood disorders, behavioral difficulties, trauma, low self-esteem, life transitions, and neurodevelopmental conditions.

3) Can Nurse Practitioners at Thrive assess and treat children with Autism or Dual Diagnosis? Yes. Our specialized Nurse Practitioners (such as Michelle Hermans, NP) have dedicated expertise in Child and Youth Psychiatry, including supporting children with special needs, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Dual Diagnosis (co-occurring mental health and developmental conditions).

4) Can your team prescribe mental health medications for children and youth in Ontario? Yes. Primary care Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario are fully authorized to conduct complete psychiatric assessments, diagnose mental health conditions in children and teens, and prescribe and manage psychiatric medications when appropriate.

5) Do parents or caregivers participate in child and youth therapy sessions? Yes. Caregiver involvement is a key component of youth mental health care. Depending on your child's age and clinical needs, sessions may include parent coaching, family check-ins, or individual therapy to ensure strategies are supported effectively at home and school.

6) Can I get child or youth mental health services virtually across Ontario? Yes. We offer virtual pediatric psychiatric assessments, medication consultations, and youth therapy for families living anywhere in Ontario.

7) Where can my child receive in-person therapy or psychiatric care with Thrive? In-person child and youth appointments are available at our physical clinic locations across the Durham Region and Northumberland County, including Port Perry, Whitby, Brooklin, and Cobourg.

8) Do I need a doctor's referral to book child or youth therapy at Thrive? No, a physician or pediatrician referral is not required. Parents and legal guardians can book an initial appointment directly or schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation to discuss their child's needs.
