Frequently Asked Questions
PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES
1) What psychiatric services does Thrive Therapy Services provide? We offer comprehensive, clinician-led psychiatric assessments, formal medical diagnoses, and psychiatric medication management for adolescents and adults. Our nurse practitioners evaluate and treat a broad spectrum of mental health conditions, including ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), PTSD, trauma, and mood disorders.
2) Who conducts psychiatric assessments and prescribes medication at Thrive? Psychiatric care at Thrive is provided by experienced, primary care Nurse Practitioners (NPs). In Ontario, primary care Nurse Practitioners possess advanced clinical training allowing them to independently perform psychiatric evaluations, establish official medical diagnoses, and prescribe/manage psychiatric medications.
3) How does seeing a Nurse Practitioner for psychiatric care differ from seeing a Psychiatrist? Nurse Practitioners (NPs) offer complete psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, and medication management similar to a psychiatrist, but with two distinct advantages: no physician referral is required, and wait times are significantly shorter. Furthermore, our NPs combine medical management with in-house psychotherapy, providing an all-in-one approach that eliminates the need to coordinate between separate doctors and counsellors.
4) What psychiatric medications can your Nurse Practitioners prescribe? Our Nurse Practitioners can prescribe and manage a full range of psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and both stimulant and non-stimulant options for ADHD. We conduct ongoing follow-up visits to monitor side effects, evaluate efficacy, and adjust dosages as needed.
5) Can I receive detailed psychiatric reports or accommodation letters? Yes. Detailed formal psychiatric assessment reports, diagnosis documentation, and letters of accommodation for workplaces, universities, and schools are available upon request following your evaluation.
6)Can I access psychiatric services virtually across Ontario? Yes. We provide secure, confidential virtual psychiatric assessments, medication consultations, and follow-ups to clients residing anywhere in Ontario.
7) Where can I receive in-person psychiatric care with Thrive? In-person psychiatric assessments and consultations are available at our clinic locations across the Durham Region and Northumberland County, including Port Perry, Whitby, Brooklin, and Cobourg.
8) Do I need a doctor's referral to book a psychiatric assessment at Thrive? No referral from a family doctor or physician is necessary. You can book a psychiatric assessment directly online or schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation to discuss your needs and get started.
